OUR FAVORITE ACCOMMODATION

Finding the right accommodation can be tricky. It’s a balancing act between price, location, size, amenities, availability and uniqueness. Typically we use Airbnb to find and reserve self-catering homes because we have found that for longer stays it’s more comfortable and affordable than booking a hotel room. But we’ve been very pleased with other types of properties, too. On this page you will find reviews of our absolute favorite accommodations. These places really impressed us on multiple fronts: they are kid-friendly, conveniently located, and they offer extra amenities or special touches that helped make our stays memorable.

About six miles from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the secluded Eibsee Hotel welcomes guests with warm, Bavarian hospitality and tranquil views of the Eibsee, a pristine lake which offers hotel guests several recreational activities such as kayaking, fishing, swimming, and paddle boarding. The Eibsee Hotel is also the only hotel located at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest point, which can be easily reached by cable car directly in front of the hotel.

Garmsich

The history of the Eibsee Hotel spans over 100 years, and the hotel is currently owned and operated by the decedents of its founder, August Terne. The 230-bed hotel boasts an indoor swimming pool, fitness room, full restaurant and bar, a spa with saunas and a relaxation room, conference space, ski shuttles, and close proximity to walking and hiking trails.

We were fortunate to spend a night at the Eibsee Hotel in early November, and our expectations were surpassed at every turn. The friendly front desk staff allowed us to check into our room early, and we didn’t waste a minute. We bundled up and headed out onto our room’s balcony which felt as though it was hovering over the gorgeous, still lake. The majestic Zugspitze and surrounding mountains towered above us. The air was so crisp and fresh, and at night the sky revealed countless stars. We enjoyed three meals at the hotel’s restaurant which were all fantastic. We particularly enjoyed the robust breakfast buffet complete with made-to-order eggs, a yogurt bar, meats, cheeses, a juicer for fresh carrot juice, cereals and mueslis, and a selection of rolls, pastries and breads. It was the perfect fuel for a day of hiking around the lake! The hotel staff made our entire family feel welcome throughout our stay.

We recommend the Eibsee Hotel to anyone looking for an exceptionally peaceful, relaxing, and scenic hotel experience. The beauty of the surrounding landscape is naturally therapeutic, and the endless trails and outdoor activities leave you feeling invigorated and restored.

If your family is considering a stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, look no further than Margit’s Airbnb apartment. A two-bedroom, one-bathroom, first-floor apartment, Margit’s place has so many features that traveling families will appreciate. Our family of four fit perfectly in the two comfortable bedrooms, and Margit happily provided a portable crib and a high chair for our use.

The family room is bright and cozy, the perfect size for lounging and playing, and the open kitchen is fully-equipped for family meals at home. This apartment also has ample storage throughout. We had no problems unpacking for our stay and found plenty of storage for our belongings and suitcases.

Perhaps the best feature of the apartment is the walk-out backyard and patio. With soft green grass and stunning views of the mountains, it is the perfect extension of the apartment’s living space where you can enjoy meals al fresco and let the kids run around to their hearts’ content.

Catherine’s peaceful backyard cottage was a perfect fit for our three-night stay in North Wales. She welcomed us personally, provided a portable crib and high chair for our son, and her communications were prompt and helpful. She even shared with us some fresh eggs from her chickens! And Chloe and Camden enjoyed greeting and feeding the chickens whenever we left or returned home.

The entire space was bright, clean, and welcoming. The kitchen was well-equipped, and the bedroom had a bunkbed which Chloe adored. There was even a shelf full of games, puzzles, and Legos– perfect for our traveling kiddos! The location is perfect because it’s barely a mile to Rhos-on-Sea, a short 8-min drive to Conwy Castle, and a 15-min drive to Llandudno. Less than two miles away are two grocery stores, a large shopping center, and several cafes. We barely scratched the surface of what these beautiful coastal towns have to offer. We enjoyed our time at Catherine’s place, and can’t wait to return!

If you are planning a family trip to Margaret River, let us save you the research by recommending that you book Kellie’s place, “The Nook on Hermitage”.  (Search for ‘The Nook on Hermitage’ on Airbnb.) A spacious one-story, three-bedroom, two-bathroom house with a wide wraparound porch, this tranquil home is beautifully appointed, sparkling clean, and comes with a lovely, fully operational kitchen that can handle any family meal. Chloe and I even baked banana bread muffins, (an activity that’s proven to be a non-starter in most vacation rentals).

The home is situated on a quiet wooded lot just a four-minute drive from town, and we loved playing in the backyard and dining on the porch. We were awakened each morning by the beautiful, bright, tropical birds in the trees. There is a playground one block away, and there are several wooded running and biking trails that are accessible from the neighborhood. Kellie is a friendly and helpful host, and she provided plenty of advice on where to visit, shop, and eat during our stay.

The Margaret River region offers endless activities for families. There are stunning beaches, long walking tracks and trails, dozens of wineries and breweries, captivating caves, charming coastal towns, beautiful lighthouses, unique shops, and excellent restaurants, just to name a few. Kellie’s place was the perfect home from which to enjoy the region. We can’t wait to go back!

When we checked into this rental home, our family of four had stayed in 14 Airbnbs on three continents over the previous 12 months, and Ben and Nancy’s house is absolutely exceptional. A beautifully renovated and restored three-bedroom home from the 1950s, this place is so thoughtfully finished and supplied, we felt completely at home, safe, and welcome here. The airy, white kitchen was fully functional and beautiful, and the living room was open and inviting. From the comfy beds to the ample storage to the amazing showers, we were privileged to call this place home for 10 weeks as the COVID-19 pandemic escalated quickly.

Situated on a quiet street, the home has a lovely semi-private front yard, covered parking, friendly neighbors, and a stunning view of Perth’s central business district skyline from the relaxing back patio, (and the kitchen and the living room!). The location is awesome. It’s a short walk to the river where parks and trails abound, and it’s an even shorter walk to Albany Hwy where there is every ethnic cuisine you can imagine, wonderful coffee shops, a post office, pharmacies, grocery stores, and more.

Ben and Nancy were always prompt, friendly, and helpful in their communications. They brought games and books for our kids, (ages 5 and 2), supplied a high chair, and had welcome treats upon our arrival. They even helped us celebrate our son’s 2nd birthday! Ben and Nancy truly go above and beyond and are wonderful people. At a time when the world was spiraling into chaos, we will forever be grateful for this beautiful, safe, comfortable home and the wonderful new friends it gave us. Far away from our families in the U.S. and the U.K., this house really became our sanctuary. We dream of returning one day.
